The tools above overlap on purpose — most people arrive wanting the same thing described in different words. Here is the short version of what each is actually for.
Use the transcript viewer. It is the fastest way to find out whether a forty-minute video actually covers the thing you came for. Search filters the text as you type and every result stays linked to its timestamp, so you can jump straight to the moment rather than dragging the progress bar and guessing.
Export as plain text or Markdown. Timestamps are indispensable while you are working against the video and pure noise the moment you are not, so strip them before pasting into notes, an article, or a language model prompt.
You need a subtitle format, and which one depends on the destination. SRT is the safe default — practically every editor and platform accepts it. VTT is the web-native format, and what you want for an HTML5 player or a <track> element. If you already have a file in the wrong one, the converters handle that without re-fetching anything.
Export JSON. Each line arrives with its start time and duration, so you can align text to playback, chunk it for embedding, or feed it into whatever you are building without parsing a subtitle format first.
Every tool here reads captions that already exist on YouTube. None of them run speech recognition. That is why they are fast, free, and need no account — and equally why a video with no caption track cannot be made to produce one. If a video returns nothing, no other tool on this page will return anything either.
