A transcript is more useful than a video for almost everything except watching. It is searchable, quotable, and can be skimmed in a fraction of the runtime. Here is how to get the most out of the one above.
The five formats are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one creates work later:
<track> element. The search box filters the transcript as you type and each result stays linked to its timestamp, so clicking a line jumps the video there. For a long talk or lecture this is usually faster than dragging the progress bar, and it is the quickest way to check whether a video actually covers the thing you came for before committing forty minutes to it.
This tool reads captions that already exist on YouTube — it does not run speech recognition. So if a video has captions disabled, or the uploader never added them and YouTube's automatic captions have not been generated, there is nothing to extract and no setting on our side will change that. Automatic captions also take time to appear on very recently uploaded videos. Music videos are the most common disappointment: they frequently ship with no caption track at all.
Where a human wrote the captions, the text is usually near-perfect. Where YouTube generated them automatically, expect the familiar weak spots: proper nouns, technical terms, overlapping speakers, and strong accents. Punctuation is inferred rather than spoken, so sentence boundaries drift. If you intend to quote something, it is worth playing those few seconds back — click the timestamp and check it against the audio.
